While working towards his master’s degree in international relations, he took on a job as a journalist, covering the 1984 Democratic National Convention for United Press International. The job was made permanent and he left his studies. UPI transferred him to Washington, D.C., before appointing him as a Middle East correspondent. He returned to Washington, taking a job at CNN.
