the motorola q
i had the opportunity to play with different versions of the motorola q for several months as it went through various tweaks and improvements, primarily with the keyboard design. i know that many people have been complaining about the long lag between the initial announcement of the q in 2005 and its release, but i think people will be quite pleased with the shipping product and will be happy to see that motorola is back to producing high quality devices. i put together the motorola q reviewer’s guide, so i’ve had the opportunity to use one since march. i am a huge thumb-keyboard and windows mobile smartphone fan, and after using the motorola q on verizon wireless’ ev-do network i was seriously considering buying one and getting a verizon account to go along with my t-mobile family plan … except that i found a couple of issues that prevented me from taking the plunge.
{ad} as regular readers know i have been quite the advocate of the treo 650, but the last few months have found that device sitting in my bag while the i-mate sp5m wm 5.0 smartphone has been the primary device on my belt. i prefer the user interface of a windows mobile 5.0 smartphone and the sp5m has been rock solid, with the best rf performance and stability i have ever seen in a mobile device. the treo 650 has issues with call quality, and if you load too many third-party applications it can get unstable as well. with the motorola q i should now be able to get the user interface and power of windows mobile along with a qwerty keyboard in a single device.

the motorola q from verizon wireless
initial impressions
when i first received the motorola q i was blown away by the form factor and “caressability” of the device. it is extremely thin at only 0.45 inches (the i-mate sp5m and treo 650 are both about 0.75 inches) and feels rock solid in your hand. the qvga landscape-oriented display is unique for a wm smartphone, and the high resolution looks wonderful. the stereo speakers are loud and the camera works well. it was nice to see a jog dial again on a device since i missed these from my sony cli㉠days. the thumb-keyboard is well spaced even for my fingers (i am 6’1″ and 240 lbs.) and makes text messaging and e-mail a pleasure on a smartphone. the ability to use bluetooth stereo headphones is also a major bonus, and the other bluetooth profiles are very well integrated with the bluetooth manager. this was my first experience using ev-do services, and after experiencing it on the q i am impressed with its speed.
in the box
the box from verizon is an attractive black and red stylish container and includes the motorola q, a motorola charger, usb cable, cd, user manual, and verizon wireless sync manual. the review kit i received also included the motorola q reviewer’s guide i wrote, motorola bluetooth stereo headphones, a motorola q puzzle, and a large cardboard q piece of promotional material along with the return fedex label (i think i’ll have to misplace this while joel and i play with the device). check out all 13 of my unboxing photos of the motorola q.
exterior hardware
the specifications of the motorola q are listed below, so let’s jump right into
taking a physical tour around the device.
front
centered above the display you will find the telephone speakers that provide clear sound when you make or receive calls without a headset. the motorola logo is located between the two speakers. below this is the 2.4-inch qvga 320×240 high resolution display.
near the center of the device you will find the two soft keys just below the display, with the send, home, back, and end buttons below these two keys. the end key will also minimize the application you are using and take you back to the home screen. all these buttons are similar to the motorola razr in that they are flush with the housing of the device with rubberized lines separating the buttons. they actually work quite well and are easy to locate and press.
between the buttons centered on the q is the directional pad and action key in the center. this is one of the best designed directional pads i have used, and i never once slipped and went in the wrong direction, unlike my experiences on the audiovox smt 5600 and i-mate sp5m.
top of the q’s front
soft keys and directional pad
below the navigational buttons you will see the prominent qwerty keyboard. like the treo devices, the letters w e r s d f x z x c also serve as numbers to dial a contact. you can also use the qwerty keyboard to start spelling a contact’s name and your contacts will filter to that person. you cannot perform common text editing functions like cut, copy, and paste or to launch applications with keyboard shortcuts, though. it would be great if microsoft and manufacturers would increase the functionality of the qwerty keyboards on these devices.
the q keyboard
the q and treo 650 keyboards compared
i am fairly big guy with average sized hands, and i found the keys to be well spaced, allowing for very accurate and fast data entry. i wrap my forefinger and middle finger around the back of the device and use my two thumbs to enter data, and i found the q very comfortable in this position. the keys also offer good tactile feedback and response when pressed. the keyboard has a very nice blue backlight that lights up the entire key with the punctuation and other alternate key showing up as well.
check out that backlighting
there is an alt key that allows you to enter the alternative symbols or characters found on the keys; it also serves to switch text entry modes. the shift key can be double-pressed for caps as well. there is only one shift key on the right, and i would often press the alt key by accident thinking it was a shift key like on most keyboards.
along the bottom row of the keyboard you will find the messaging/display brightness button to the left of the space bar. a single press will launch messaging, and pressing and holding it will allow you to toggle through different display brightness levels. the camera and voice recognition quick launch keys are located to the right of the space bar.
the last thing you will find on the front of the motorola q is the microphone hole for making calls and recording voice notes. the people i called reported that i was coming in loud and clear, except when my cheek covered the microphone opening.
left side
the infrared port is located at the top of the left side and is found in the same opening area as the externally accessible minisd slot. i love having this here rather than behind the battery as i can quickly swap out cards and transfer music using a card reader rather than going through activesync. the cover is a bit difficult to open unless you have longer fingernails, but i imagine it will loosen up a bit after regular usage.
the last item on the left side is the miniusb connection port. this is used for connecting to your computer or to the motorola charging cable. this isn’t a standard miniusb port, although it looks like one, and it will allow you to sync with a standard cable. however, you will need to use the motorola cable to charge the q.
left side of the device
right side
on the right side you will find something i haven’t seen since my days of using the sony cli㉠devices:a jog wheel. this is used for quick navigation, and pressing in on the jog wheel works the same as the center press on the navigational pad, so it selects the object or function you have highlighted. a small square button below this serves as a back button, so you have some great navigational options on the q.
upper part of right side
bottom
there is absolutely nothing along the bottom of the q, which is good since you can throw it in your pocket and not worry about anything getting hurt or stuck along the bottom of the device.
top
there are some openings along the top that i am guessing may be for ventilation of the device. on the right side of the top you will find the standard 2.5 mm headset jack for connecting a wired headset to the q. i only use a bluetooth headset so i never even open the cover of the headset port.
back
on the right and left corners of the back you will find small nubs to protect the camera lens when you set the device down on a table; they raise the q’s back off a flat surface a millimeter or so. the 1.3-megapixel camera is located just to the right of center along the top of the back. there is no self-portrait mirror like that found on some devices, but i never used this anyway so that is not really a big feature for me. directly below the camera a few millimeters is the photo light that serves to provide bright light in low-light environments. the light shines continuously when activated and then turns off after a photo is taken.
Rf Manager 2017 Nokia N7000
camera on the back
the battery cover takes up most of the bottom half of the back, and under the cover you will find a 1130 mah battery that provides a stated talk time of 200 minutes and a standby time of 200 hours. i haven’t had a production unit long enough to test the battery claims yet.
the last feature on the back are the two stereo speakers that provide excellent high quality sound when you are not using a headset and serve as the speakers during a speakerphone call.
stereo speakers on the back
interior hardware
the q’s 300mhz processor is one of, if not the fastest, on a windows mobile smartphone device, and the q performs extremely well with no lagging issues. i was able to open up multiple applications and zip right along with the device. motorola was also generous with the 128 mb rom (about 50 mb available to the user) and 64 mb ram (about 52 mb available to the user). you can run pretty much all of your applications without any problem and even load most of them right into rom. i prefer to load most of my apps on my minisd card and just keep a few critical apps loaded into the rom.
this is the first device with an ev-do radio that i have used, so i can’t compare it to other devices using the same 3g radio. i ran some tests with it against my edge-supported i-mate sp5m and found the q chugging along at about 375kbps in the same area where the sp5m was reaching speeds of 145kbps. i did record speeds of 1,090kbps on the i-mate sp5m when connected via wi-fi. i get excellent t-mobile coverage at my house and am not seeing very good coverage (0 to 1 bar) with the motorola q. with the fast speeds of ev-do i do not think there is a vital reason to have wi-fi on a mobile device since you are not going to transfer gigabyte files or perform high end tasks requiring these types of speeds on a mobile device anyway. however, it is nice to have the flexibility of wi-fi so you can use your device in areas where you may not have cellular coverage.
the motorola q has an integrated bluetooth 1.2 radio with a very nice stack and bluetooth manager. the motorola q bluetooth manager includes profiles to connect with a headset, personal network, stereo headset, and bluetooth keyboard. there is no included ability to use the motorola q as an ev-do modem for a pc, which is disappointing since users will be paying at least $80 a month for wireless data access and the ability to tether with a pc would be a good selling point. bluetooth stereo quality is excellent, and i tested it with a motorola headset and the iphono mini headphones (see my review). the bluetooth manager makes it very easy to share files with your pc using bluetooth, so even novice bluetooth users should be able to get it going without a problem.
bluetooth manager
the camera takes what appear to be better photos than the ones i have taken with the 1.3-megapixel camera on my i-mate sp5m. you can check out a couple of comparison photos below to see the differences (all settings on auto with highest quality image). the preview screen only takes up the center area of the display and does not fill up the entire window. the camera does take video up to 176×144 resolution. there are several settings in the camera application, including brightness settings, resolution settings, zoom (up to 6x digital),
white balance, and flash. the photo light works fine for close-up shots in poor lighting conditions, but i wouldn’t count on it if you want a quality photo in these conditions.

software
the motorola q includes all the standard windows mobile 5 software, like messaging, pocket internet explorer, windows media player, bubble breaker and solitaire games, and pim suite. you will also find that picsel viewer is integrated in the device. this took me a bit of time to find since there is no application that will show up on the device until you put an office document on it; at that point you will be prompted to open the document, so the viewer is seamless with the device.
the motorola q home screen
verizon also includes a wireless sync utility that gives you push e-mail capability powered by intellisync. i tried to test this out, but since i am not a verizon wireless customer i couldn’t finish the setup process
verizon wireless sync
motorola included a voice recognition utility that actually works very well–even through a bluetooth headset or car kit–to dial contacts, send text messages, lookup contacts, and open applications.
voice recognition utility
a file manager, task manager, and memory manager are also included and perform well on the q. one other utility included to make your audio experience richer is the audio enhancement. with this utility you can set up the stereo speakers or you headset surround sound, bass, and clarity settings.

can the motorola q replace my treo 650 and i-mate sp5m?
without a doubt the motorola q has the possibility of replacing these two devices in my collection, but there are a couple of issues preventing it from doing so. phone quality, text and e-mail functionality, web surfing, and multimedia functions are important to me on a phone device, and the motorola q excels at all of these tasks. the sp5m fails in the text entry since it only has a phone keypad and the treo 650 fails due to its subpar phone quality and lack of multitasking. the q won’t replace my i-mate sp5m though because the rf signal is poor to nonexistent at my house, there is no aku-2 push e-mail update, and the verizon wireless monthly plan fees are priced about $20 too high for the minutes offered. i also prefer to have the flexibility of wi-fi in my device.
the treo 650, motorola q, i-mate sp5m, and nokia n70
the treo 650, motorola q, i-mate sp5m, and nokia n70 again
conclusion
i was ready to purchase the motorola q after using it for the last couple of months and was quite surprised to see it available for only $199 after instant rebate with a two-year service plan. however, the verizon wireless minimum monthly fee of $80 makes it too expensive for the consumer, and too expensive for me to add to my collection. the business user may not balk at the monthly fees, though. one weak area of the q as it enters the enterprise market to compete with the blackberry is that aku-2 with push e-mail is not yet supported, and this may impact the business purchaser. you could set up the q to sync at intervals as short as 5 minutes, so i honestly don’t know how important this ability is, but when you try to compare the q to a blackberry that has push e-mail out of the box this may make a difference.
i think the selling price of the hardware is an outstanding value. when you compare treo devices at $300-$400 or greater and most other pocket pc phone edition devices at $300 or more, you can see that the motorola q looks to have hit the sweet spot in pricing.
if the monthly data and voice services were priced lower, maybe when sprint comes out with its q verizon will get more competitive. at that point i would easily recommend the device to anyone looking for a new cellular phone since text messaging and e-mail composition with a thumb-keyboard is faster and easier than t9 input. the q’s slim form factor makes it an extremely pocketable device, and the rock solid construction and performance also make it a clear winner.
phone quality is very important to reach the mass market, and many older generation smartphones and even current generation phone edition models fall flat here. the motorola q performs very well as a phone, so this makes it an even better choice. the q is also an amazing multimedia device, actually really more so than a business-oriented device, so it should appeal to the younger crowd looking for a versatile device.
while the q marketing materials are targeted to the business, rim blackberry-type user, i think it will do well with the younger text messaging and multimedia crowd as well, and will have to stress the syncing options without aku-2 to sell to the enterprise.

i give the motorola q the full 5 geekheads for quality since it is rock solid, integrates lots of functionality in a very slim form factor while including a full qwerty keyboard, has outstanding phone quality (which is a major concern for a phone to appeal to the mass market), and provides critical business functionality (viewing office documents, readily available e-mail) while serving as a great multimedia device.
Serial Number Internet Download Manager 2017
for geekness i award the motorola q 4 geekheads because it adds some unique features to the smartphone platform, such as the landscape high resolution display, jog dial, stereo speakers, and qwerty keyboard in an amazingly thin form factor. it does lack wi-fi and the push e-mail functionality, but ev-do is plenty fast for a mobile device and you can still set up activesync to sync every 5 minutes until (i hope it will come) an aku-2 update is provided by motorola.
Football Manager 2017 System Requirements
motorola has sold me on the q, and if verizon wireless would drop its minimum monthly plan by about $20 then i may order one just to use the device on the fast ev-do network. i hope a umts/hsdpa version is released in time for the holidays so t-mobile and cingular customers, along with worldwide users, get the opportunity to use the motorola q.
i applaud motorola on the hardware, except for the lack of aku-2, and award a geek.com pick to the device that has me on the edge of buying evdo just to use one!
